What's the difference between mean and median?
The mean adds everything and divides by the count; the median is the middle value. For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 the mean is 18 and the median 15.5. One very large value pulls the mean up but barely moves the median.
Sample or population standard deviation?
Use the population version when you have every value in the group, and the sample version (dividing by n − 1) when your numbers are a sample of a larger group. Excel's STDEV.S is the sample one.
