How it works

WebP was designed by Google for the web. It supports transparency and animation like PNG and GIF, with compression closer to JPG, which makes it a good default for website images. All major browsers display it today.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller is WebP?

Google reports lossy WebP files are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and lossless WebP about 26% smaller than PNG. For screenshots and graphics saved as PNG, lossy WebP is often far smaller still.

Why did I get a PNG instead of a WebP?

Safari can display WebP but can't create it. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox to convert.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your photos never leave your device. You can even go offline after the page loads.
