Dog Years Calculator
Enter your dog's age to see it in human years, from the American Veterinary Medical Association's chart, with a DNA-based estimate for comparison.
How the calculator works
Dogs grow up fast. The American Veterinary Medical Association's age chart for a medium-sized dog (21–50 lb) puts a one-year-old at 15 human years and a two-year-old at 24, then adds about 4 to 5 human years a year: 47 at seven, 60 at ten and 87 at sixteen. Small breeds tend to age a little more slowly and large breeds faster, so treat the result as a guide.
The old “multiply by 7” rule is too simple: it makes a one-year-old dog seven, when most dogs are already sexually mature at that age.
A 2020 study of DNA methylation in Labrador retrievers proposed human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It fits the fast early years well and is shown for comparison from age one.

Frequently asked questions
How old is a 7-year-old dog in human years?
About 47, according to the AVMA chart for a medium-sized dog (21–50 lb). Small breeds usually come out a little younger and large breeds older.
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. Dogs mature much faster early on, so the first year is closer to 15 human years, and then aging slows to about 4–6 years per dog year.
When is a dog considered senior?
Vets usually treat the last quarter of a dog's expected lifespan as senior: often around 10 for small dogs and 6–8 for large and giant breeds.
