Finger Chooser

Everyone puts a finger on the screen; hold still for two seconds and one finger is picked at random. It can also pick several people or split everyone into teams.

Finger chooser

Put your fingers on the screen

2 or more, then hold still for 2 seconds

How to play

  1. Put the phone flat on a table and have everyone place one finger in the box.
  2. Once enough fingers are down, a ring fills around each one for 2 seconds. Nobody lifts or adds a finger in the meantime.
  3. The chosen finger grows and the rest fade. When one person is picked, the background turns their colour.
  4. Lift all fingers and the result stays for a moment, then a new round begins.

Three modes

  • One: picks one person once 2 or more fingers are down.
  • Several: picks 2–5 people and numbers them. You need one more finger than the number to pick (3–6).
  • Teams: splits the fingers into 2–5 teams with numbers and colours; team sizes differ by at most one.

Is it fair?

When the 2 seconds are up, the list of fingers on screen is shuffled with cryptographic random numbers and the first ones are picked. Who touched first, or where, doesn't matter. If a finger is added or lifted, the 2-second count starts over with the fingers on screen at that moment.

On a computer

A mouse can't hold several points at once, so each click drops a point that stays. Click once per person and wait 2 seconds; click a point again to remove it.

If some fingers aren't detected

Every device has a limit on simultaneous touches; on a phone it's shown under the box. For bigger groups use the ladder game or the random team generator. Finger positions are never saved or sent.

Frequently asked questions

How does a finger chooser work?

Everyone places a finger in the box. When the fingers stay put for 2 seconds, one is picked at random and highlighted while the rest fade.

Does touching first help?

No. The fingers on screen when the 2 seconds end are shuffled with cryptographic randomness, so order and position don't matter.

How many people can play?

As many fingers as your device detects at once. On a phone or tablet the number is shown under the box.

Can I use it on a computer?

Yes. Click once per person to drop a point, then wait two seconds. Click a point again to remove it.

Is this like the Chwazi app?

It works the same way as finger chooser apps such as Chwazi, but in the browser with nothing to install, and it can also pick several people or make teams.
