What to do

One name per line, or separate with commas. Names stay on this page; nothing is saved or sent.

Split by

2

Enter at least two names.

Enter names and press the button to see the result here.

How the teams are made

All names are shuffled with the Fisher–Yates method, which makes every order equally likely, using your browser's cryptographic random numbers. The list is then cut into teams of the planned sizes. When the numbers don't divide evenly, some teams get one extra person, and which teams those are is random too, so team sizes never differ by more than one.

Team sizes by group size

People2 teams3 teams4 teams
63 · 32 · 2 · 22 · 2 · 1 · 1
84 · 43 · 3 · 22 · 2 · 2 · 2
105 · 54 · 3 · 33 · 3 · 2 · 2
126 · 64 · 4 · 43 · 3 · 3 · 3
158 · 75 · 5 · 54 · 4 · 4 · 3
2010 · 107 · 7 · 65 · 5 · 5 · 5
3015 · 1510 · 10 · 108 · 8 · 7 · 7

For example, 10 people in 3 teams come out as 4 · 3 · 3; which team gets the extra person changes every time.

Splitting by team size

With People per team, the number of teams is people ÷ team size rounded up, and then everyone is spread evenly, so a team can end up below the size you chose:

15 people, 4 per team44 · 4 · 4 · 3
20 people, 6 per team45 · 5 · 5 · 5

Random order

Random order puts everyone in a shuffled order from No. 1, handy for presentations, turns or a draft. Up to 100 names of 20 characters each; repeated names count as different people.

What it's good for

  • Pickup soccer, basketball or PE teams
  • Class projects and study groups
  • Tables, cars or breakout rooms

It doesn't balance skill or gender; if you need that, split each group separately and combine them. Names stay on this page and are never saved or sent.

Frequently asked questions

How does the random team generator work?

It shuffles all names with the Fisher–Yates method using your browser's cryptographic randomness, then cuts the list into teams of the planned sizes.

What if the numbers don't divide evenly?

Some teams get one extra person, chosen at random, so sizes never differ by more than one. 10 people in 3 teams become 4 · 3 · 3.

How many teams do I get when I set a team size?

People ÷ team size, rounded up, with everyone spread evenly: 10 people with 3 per team gives 4 teams of 3 · 3 · 2 · 2.

How many names can I enter?

Up to 100, each up to 20 characters. Repeated names count as different people.

Can it balance teams by skill?

No, it only splits at random. To balance, split each skill group separately and combine the teams.
