How it works
Safari opens HEIC directly. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox the page loads a HEIC decoder that runs on your device, converts each photo and saves it as JPG. Your photos aren't uploaded anywhere, which matters for personal pictures.

Frequently asked questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the format iPhones use for photos by default (since iOS 11). It can be about half the size of a JPG at similar quality, but Windows and many websites can't open it without help.
How do I make my iPhone take JPG photos instead?
Go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. To convert automatically when copying to a computer, set Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC to “Automatic”.
Why is the first conversion slow?
Browsers other than Safari can't read HEIC, so the page loads a decoder (about 2.7 MB) the first time. After that, conversion is quicker.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your photos never leave your device. You can even go offline after the page loads.
