How Morse code timing works

Everything is measured in units. A dot is 1 unit and a dash 3; the gap inside a letter is 1 unit, between letters 3 and between words 7. At 18 WPM a unit lasts 1200 ÷ 18 ≈ 67 milliseconds.

The International Morse code used today is defined by the ITU (Recommendation M.1677-1). It's still used by amateur radio operators, in aviation navigation beacons and as an accessibility input method.

Frequently asked questions

What is SOS in Morse code?

··· ––– ··· (... --- ...). It's sent as one continuous signal, without the usual gaps between letters.

How fast is Morse code?

Speed is measured in words per minute (WPM) using the word PARIS as a standard. Beginners copy around 5–10 WPM; experienced operators often send 20–30 WPM.

Which characters are supported?

Letters A–Z, digits, common punctuation and a few accented letters (É, Ä, Ö, Ü, Ñ, Ç, À, È). Other accented letters are sent without their accent.
