Anatomy of a shrug

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is 9 characters: a macron ¯ for each raised hand, a backslash and a slash for the arms, underscores for the shoulders, and the katakana ツ as the face.

Because \ and _ mean something in Markdown, chat apps that support formatting may swallow them. The Discord / Reddit option adds a backslash before each one, which tells those apps to show the character as it is.

Why does my shrug lose an arm?

Discord, Reddit and other Markdown apps treat \ and _ as formatting, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ turns into ¯_(ツ)_/¯. The safe version escapes them: ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯.

What is the face in the middle?

ツ is the Japanese katakana letter “tsu”. Its shape happens to look like a smiling face.

Is there a real shrug emoji?

Yes: 🤷 (person shrugging) was added in Unicode 9.0 in 2016. The text version ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is older and works everywhere.
