Microphone Test

Click the button, allow microphone access and say something. The meter moves when your mic picks up sound.

Microphone test

Everything runs in your browser. Audio is never uploaded or saved.

If the meter doesn't move

  • Browser: click the lock or camera icon next to the address and set Microphone to Allow, then reload.
  • Windows: Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone, and turn on access for apps and for your browser.
  • macOS: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone, and turn on your browser.
  • Pick the right device in the Microphone menu above (it appears after the first test).
  • Check the mute switch or button on your headset, and close Zoom, Teams or Discord if they are holding the mic.

Reading the level

The meter shows dBFS, decibels relative to the loudest signal the mic can deliver (0 dBFS). Speech typically lands somewhere between −40 and −10 dBFS depending on the mic and its gain. If the bar turns red and sits near 0 while you talk, the input is clipping: lower the gain or move back a little.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my microphone working?

The most common causes: the browser or operating system blocked access, the wrong input device is selected, the mic is muted on the headset, or another app is using it. The checklist below covers each one.

Is the mic test private?

Yes. The sound is processed in your browser to draw the meter. Nothing is recorded unless you press Record, and that clip stays on your device.

Why does my voice sound worse on Bluetooth headphones?

When a Bluetooth headset's microphone is in use, it switches to a hands-free profile with much lower audio quality. A wired or USB mic usually sounds better.
